What is a freelance geologist?

Well, a freelance geologist loves to work outdoors, whether sitting on a drilling rig in the desert or collecting samples in the mountainous backcountry. A freelance geologist has field smarts: she knows how to use a compass, map a formation, reckon her location, drive a truck, swing a hammer, paddle a kayak, set up a belay and log GPS points. She is fascinated by maps and mapping technologies, GPS, GIS, Google Earth. A freelance geologist exists outside of academia.
